The purpose of this site is to help people to crate their own hand-made robots.
The idea of this site appears in the March 2003, when American Mars research vehicle landed to the Red Planet and start to transmit pictures. And I thought ? if it is possible to see pictures from another planet, why not to see pictures from another side of the Earth? There are a lot of people, who have never been in my place and why not to give them a chance to see different places and drive the robots somewhere in another continent.
We are living in the World where high tech play outstanding role. If you have a computer, connected to the Internet, you can be united with all the people, who like modern technology.
Why we decide to create our own hand-made robot?
Yes, it is well-known fact, that now you can order from E-Commerce site any kind of robot and do what you want with it.
You can start from about $200-300 and bought student set of parts and get you own robot running in a several days. Or, if you have enough money ( $1000- $1000,000), you can bough robot dogs or other advanced machines.
But we prefer to create our own robots, because of price (in reality hand-made robots are not always cheaper then factory produced), but rather because of different target of our project.
I am a Java server-side programmer. On a job we create serious enterprise scale applications, using JSP/EJB/XML and it is difficult to explain to usual people what we are doing.
I like to use Java very much. I spent about 12 years to C/C++, but now I suppose, that Java is much better. In my eyes it is the best language.
I have a son. He was 13 at that time, when we started. It was March 2004.
And I had an idea to teach my son my favorite language ? Java. But how to start?
There was no so big interest to Java from my son.
Often I saw, that him sitting on his own PC and playing games. I was not sure that it is the best way to spend the time.
And when I saw on TV pictures from Mars I said to myself ? why not to use J2ME Java in my cell phone as a brain and embedded camera as a robot eye? Also may be it is possible to use sound to communicate with the robot, etc.
And I decide to share my idea with my son. Fortunately, he was interested in this project and we start to work.
Now we have some sub-projects. We tried a lot of things ? hardware and software solutions and we will be happy to share our experience with another people, who want to use Java as a brain for robots.
